Why empathy and sympathy is important right now

There are bushfires on an annual basis in Australia. But the toll of casualties from the Victorian bushfires has been just horrific. The Age newspaper has announced that there are currently 108 confirmed dead, and more than 700 homes wiped off the face of the earth. Its also been reported that esteemed Victorian newsreader Brian Naylor was killed along with his wife. And the tragedy continues.

I'm sure there will be plenty of internet forums full of users making nasty comments and off-color jokes about the death toll from this fire. Honest to god, now is not the time for the snark and negativity that regularly permeates the internet. For god's sake, have some sympathy for your fellow human beings: If you don't have anything nice or constructive to say right now, just shut up.

As for the people who were unlucky enough to be involved in this horrific tragedy, my deepest sympathies to them.
