Thoughts on Platform Vendors

I thought this article from Joel on Software was mostly relevant to Windows 7. The point being made was that any Developer trying to fill a hole in a vendor's application is like "snatching nickels from the path of an oncoming steam roller".

With DVD burning and DVD playback now both native to Windows 7, applications like Nero Burning Rom and Cyberlink PowerDVD become less and less of a necessity. I'm sure that Cyberlink is breathing a sigh of relief that Microsoft didn't add Blu-Ray playback natively to Windows 7. Right now, Cyberlink has almost a virtual monopoly on Blu-Ray playback on PC's – I'd be quite happy to see that particular monopoly broken.

Both Cyberlink and Nero are examples of developers trying to fill holes in a vendor's application. I suspect both companies are bracing themselves for being runover by a steamroller.
